Took these 2 shots this afternoon and, apart from my not noticing that twig in front when I took them, I was baffled as to why/how that branch at top
left was bought into focus.
I was using spot metering on the birds head.

It looks to me like there's a bend/knuckle in the branch and that 'knuckle' must have been at about the same focal length of the bird's head.
Unless anyone else has an alternative explanation?
I agree with Pol, the part of the branch that's in focus is at the same distance from the camera as the bird's head.
Bit confused by your question though Pops as spot metering is not related to focusing (unless I'm going to learn something!)

Just went out and had a look at the branch and you are both right. The above branch does have a bend forward which goes along with your thoughts. Didn't notice from my position at the time.
If the pics had been worth keeping I would have cloned it out cus I think it looks odd
