  • Father v Son

My son is taking a keen interest in photography of late and I found him up by our pond taking pictures the evening I received my new 40D so I challenged him to take a shot of the waterlilies with his minuscule Nikon 5600 and we'd compare it with one taken with my new toy.

Here he is getting damp for the sake of art!

And here's the results. I don't think he, or the camera, did too badly?

Hopefully you can tell which one was taken with a camera & lens that cost 10 times what his 5.1 mp Nikon did !!

In my defence it was only the 11th shot through the 40D and I hadn't even tried to play around with the settings (I mention all this in case someone picks HIS picture )

And NO right-clicking on the pictures to look at the properties - I rather stupidly made the file names a giveaway!

I have to say I was hard pushed to tell with any certainty which was which. I really wanted to believe the left hand one was yours, mainly because I liked the composition and low angle better than the other. However I see I was wrong. Not to worry though, I've always thought that closeups such as this flattered digicams. His wouldn't stand a chance with shots like you took at the zoo.

for me it was the "smoothness" of the leaves that told me the right was canon. I didn't actually look at the composition.

I just wasn't prepared to go prone on the damp grass , hence the higher viewpoint.

He actually came to the Zoo with me - as did my daughter with her 7 MP Canon compact - but neither of them have shown me their results yet. I'm looking forward to seeing my daughter's pics because she's actually quite good and her camera is certainly capable of excellent results. Unfortunately both their cameras have limited zooms so Zoo shoots are, as you say, a bit of an unfair challenge.

Although Dan doesn't know it yet, he's getting a new camera with a good zoom range for Christmas - I just need to decide which one!

            Re: Father v Son

I must be blind, I don't see a Right and a Left. I just see one below the other. I like the top one best. I don't know which camera it was taken with though. My reasoning is because on the one below, the centre of the water lily is not quite sharp; but then I have tried many times to capture these in our pond and find them REALLY difficult to get a focus on.

I shall post this and then have a look to see which one I have chosen.

I like the top one, seems a lot brighter.

Whoops! I chose the wrong one. Sorry Stuart. I actually prefer the colour of the waterlily which was taken with your son's camera also. What little camera does he have?

Also, write out 100 times "I must try harder, to justify the expense."

I think these little cameras are marvellous. I have a Panasonic Lumix DMC01 which I carry in my handbag all the time. I have had some fantastic photos from it. I also have a Fuji S9500 which can do a lot and gives a good picture but is not so convenient. I think they all have a place, because from time to time I still use my Canon Poweshot G3, which you can't beat for the tilt and turn viewer.

I'm just going to have to lay on the grass and shoot it again

Stuart I owe you one. You have just ruined my chance of an upgrade. My wife has just walked away muttering, "Whats the point if you can't tell the difference between an expensive camera and a cheap one." I had to agree or spend the night with the dog in the garage.

Well I think it was an unfair test cus Stuart had only had the camera an hour or so and he didn't want to get his knees wet.

It sure makes you wonder if the DSLR is over rated. See this post of Stephens http://dpnow.com/forum2/showthread.php?t=3186 which also showed that compacts are a force to be reckoned with.

I keep on coming back to the one on the right - it's better composed and the one on the left looks like it was flash illuminated and a bit lacking in saturation. My choice for the 40D then is the one on the right
