And the focus mode was? Also was this a single shot or one of a sequence?

Oh alright! Manual pre-focused, one of a continuous sequence of 5 shots.

      Why?

Because I wondered if you had used a follow focus/AI focus mode, does the 510 have such a mode, it seemed as though the focus point was spot on.

If you had used such a mode I was going to ask if it was spot on throughout the sequence. So my question now is what were the other 4 shots like if you manually focused?

I did try continuous focus (continuous and predictive AF), but a) I'm not a very good motorsports photographer and b) from my vantage point, the cars moved in the field of view enough for me to not be able to keep the active AF point on the car reliably enough - quite tricky when using a monopod - especially when said monopod is really too lightweight for this particular lens (all 3Kg+ of it!).

The others in the sequence were out of focus as I basically stayed on one spot on the track and hoped that one frame would be in focus.

Well the one shown here is pretty good.
I believe the 510 will shoot at 3fps, and from what you say it seems the camera isn't great at this sort of work, without more skill at least Now the new E3 (or whatever its to be called) to be announced soon, is supposed to be the Pro model. Do you expect it to have faster shooting modes and more accurate focus modes that would appeal to sports shooters?

The leaked information, if true, and I have no firm confirmation at all, suggests eleven cross-type AF points instead of just three and 5fps. The apparently leaked info also claims that the AF will be the fastest in the industry when used with the new generation of sonic AF (Sonic Wave Drive - SWD) Olympus lenses. If true, that has to be better than what's currently available from Olympus. The E-510 continuous predictive AF works fine when the AF lock can be accurately maintained; I've successfully run off continuous sequences with a car on a public road approaching me, for example. Most DSLRs can do this, so it's not special.

Indeed, though I struggled a little at a swimming event recently using a 30D along side my 1DMkIIN. It just couldn't cope, so had to stop using it eventually

If these rumours are to be believed, it sounds like the camera maybe something special

Re: F1 Renault Grand Prix car

Well it looks spot on to me even if it is a Renault. I take it you pre focused on the track then just fired off the shots. Getting one that spot on with a 1 in 3 chance was good. I am off later in week to try my hand at something that I do not get to shoot very often so that should be fun I will hopefully have something to post on Friday. Wish me luck I feel that I will need it.

Oh sorry must ask where was this taken and do you know who the driver was

Today I'm at the office and viewing on my big monitor, I can see that the pic is too dark. I edited this on my laptop and the viewing angle is quite acute, though the screen is calibrated. I'll use a reference image from now on!

I was at the Renault World Series meeting at Donington Park yesterday. Pentax and Adobe share the same PR company so it was a bit of a jolly. Was able to use a 'Media' pass to get to where the marshalls were and so get an unobstructed view at the end of the main pits straight.

One of the Formula Renault cars went straight on at the end of the straight and we were covered in flying gravel - quite scary! Car was badly damaged but sheepish driver walked back to the pits, via our vantage point

                    See:

Free World Series by Renault tickets available for Donington Park. Free tickets for the UK leg of the World Series by Renault will be available from the series’ official website on Monday 21 st May. Fans will be able to order up to four tickets per household for the race weekend, which takes place on 8 th/9 th September at Donington Park . Last year, a crowd of more than 90,000 enjoyed a feast of motorsport action with many spectators attending a motor racing event for the first time.

I believe the F1 demo was driven by test-driver Jonathan Cochet.

Rene Arnoux also demo'd the original Renault F1 turbo - which I saw at its first race at the British GP at Silverstone in 1977

I got a shot of him locking up, but then I was more concerned with taking avoiding action

More pix later - have to go into London now.

                          Superb Ian!
I am so jealous you got to go to this, if ever you want to take an apprentice along, I would be first in the queue!

I would love to see some shots of Rene Arnoux in the original Turbo....

It is a little dark, but thats been covered. Looking forward to seeing some more.

Here is Rene Arnoux in the original Mk1 Renault F1 Turbo

I've created an album from the Renault Sport World Series weekend at Donington if you are interested. I'll be adding more shots in the next few days.

nice photos liked the panning shots. I bet the Mk1 Renault F1 Turbo would not meet the crash test these days but then I guess it had a better sound then some of todays cars. I will pop back over the next few days to see what you have added.
