  • Little to see in Little Holland...

Stephen and I went out on one of our mini-trips at 6am today. The Humber estuary, on the south side of the river, about 8 miles east of the Humber Bridge had appeared to be home to several old boat wrecks according to Google's satellite photos, but when we got there we discovered.......

....nothing at all really. The boats had long since been removed

Anyway, as always we made the best of a bad situation by moaning and cursing for a while, before finally deciding to photograph whatever we could find in the area where the boats should have been.

Here are my, er..........gems. Hopefully Stephen will post some of his too.......in the meantime, thanks for looking

    Firstly, some grass...

    Then a crane...

And now some cracked mud and a bit of a gulley...

Anyway, we did what we could...

Great shots Tim, particularly love the first one. Here's one I took in the same vicinity, as the tide rolled in up one of those gulleys

Again, I realise this is not the critique board, but I like the last one in particular - would you have consdered cloning out the post that's in the centre of the frame?

I know you like to add vignetting, but the bottom left corner does look dark; was this by intention?

It hadn't occured to me to clone the post, but it could easily be done. There's no added vignette on the third shot, the lower left area was pretty much in shadow relative to the overall scene, mainly because the sun was still low to the east; it was about 8am. I've retained the fall-off of light as it was, although I have boosted contrast and saturation a bit.

I love the first shot Tim, but just wished you had moved slightly to the right. I think the grass would be better a touch further to the left. This is the way I see it. I am sure no one else will.

The second shot. I like cranes and similar. I have dozens of pictures of them. They are very good subjects to photograph.

The third one is superb in composition, content, exposure and clarity. It would look good printed. I just have a little niggle about the bottom left corner, it is slightly ginger in colour compared with the rest of the picture and just a very little too dark for my eye.

Now I see it is not in the critique section. Sorry. I'll take more care next time. Anyway, now I have typed my comments, I hope you don't mind if I leave them.

This too is a lovely picture Stephen. When Ian talked about cloning out a post I thought he was talking about your post. My eye is drawn to it. But hey, it was there. (Perhaps if it were toned down a bit? )

I like the composition and the low, low angle from which you shot. It is quite unusual to have a plant growing almost in the sea.

Again I think this would look good printed.

You both did well to make the best of what you originally considered to be a bad job, but boats and wrecks have been done. These are a bit different. I like them.

I kept the grass central because I wanted the breaking waves to be visible to the left and had I composed differently, I would've blocked that element out. But each to their own, eh?

The lower corner was basically darker than the rest of the frame thanks to the low sun and relatively poor light. The mud colour is something I also experienced in Fleetwood (the previous wrecks series...) and occurs when the contrast is boosted, usually in areas that are not lit quite so well. Personally I like to introduce a small amount of surrealism to these things, rather than have things looking as they were at the scene, but again it's a question of what you prefer.

I actually did think that was the reason, but somehow I just wanted the grass to be a little off centre in addition to the breaking waves.

I know you are right - I am just too square - my husband keeps telling me that anyway.

(I have only just spotted that Ian gave this bit a mention.)

For some reason I was unable to use the "Quote" when replying to this post - a box came up telling me I needed to post at least ? (can't remember) a certain number of characters. Well I had put a whole sentence in. Tried several times but couldn't manage it. You will just have to sort out my reply.

I think you were probably typing inside the quoted section - anything inside the original quoted area isn't counted as new text.

Hey, you have your opinions and others have theirs - it doesn't mean you're square. You should say exactly what you think

Re: Little to see in Little Holland...

Another two shots I took at New Holland on Friday. As Tim hinted, we were gutted when we found the wrecks had gone. On the Google satellite image they clearly looked as though there was a promising session to be had We just stood there for long enough, until Tim said, well I'm getting me camera out to take something. We ended up with a respectable selection, which only goes to prove that you can usually get good stuff from the least promising situation. I took over a 100 shots in the short time we were there.

Part of the shoreline, we are talking the Humber Estuary here for those who don't know, had been dredged up into a mound and contained loads of old timber, tyres, cables, rope and general rubble. So I set to work to see if I could get anything interesting.

Both these shots have been processed in Lightroom and then CS3 and given a Cross processed effect. Though the first one has been desaturated from the original CP result. The second has not, though some work in selected areas with levels has gone on. I have always liked some of the effects created by Cross Processing and even did it back in the film days. Essentially it is processing Transparency film in a C41 (neg film chemistry) CS3 has a preset in the Curves palette which gives an excellent result.

Great shots. That mound of cr*p turned out to be a great resource, although I'd still have preferred the old wrecks...

Tim if you are that keen to photograph Old Wrecks you should pay us a visit. There are Hundreds of us here on our retirement park.

Them's two good pictures there Stephen. Nothing rubbish about them.
