Yes I see what you mean. I've looked at the others and they are similar.

You probably realise now that a faster shutter speed is needed. Though sometimes some movement in the animal does add some drama to the scene. Looking at the Exif data for these shots, I might suggest raising the ISO to 800 giving you around 250s which may have helped a little in freezing the action and getting sharper shots.

I once went to a Rodeo, and had exactly the same problem

      Steven,
Won't a higher ISO give it a grainy look? this event took place a dusk so the lighting was different every 10 minutes! what is your opinion?

Possibly, though Canons dSLR's give a pretty good result at ISO 800. Frankly though there is always going to be a tradeoff with these sort of conditions. I would usually think that the priority is to get a sharp result

I have had look at all of the shots and I think they are great. You have done well there Jen.

The shutter speed is a problem. Would it have helped to lower the aperture to say 2.8? There is never time to practice and it is only when we get home that we think may be we should have tried something else.

I went to the races once and think I would do better now.

            Steven,
Thank you for your advice!! And yes I would have preferred the sharper result. I have promised myself to practice my photography at dusk. Looks like i will be attending football (american style!) games this fall at the local high school! And for those who do not know it is somewhat similar to rugby but not quite as fast paced!

              Autumn,

Honestly this was a perfect case of hindsight being 20/20!When I was there I honestly thought I was taking some great pictures. I got home and downloaded them and i almost wanted to disappear! I have since learned to use the zoom feature when reviewing my pictures. Part of the problem was that the action was happening so quickly that i neglected to change my settings as i should have with the setting sun.(Another lesson learned!) I can also be somewhat hard on myself. I love photography and want to be the best I can be!So I will be doing some practice in the future!

Stephen is right. Noise can be dealt with in post processing, so getting a sharper image to start with using a higher shutter speed is more important.
