  • Another macro question

Where's George when you need him??

I'm still struggling with the macro aspect of my Canon. Here are 2 pictures I took at the weekend, the first with my Sony k800i camera phone, the second with the Canon.

Apart from the fact that the colours are a bit washed out on the sony (which wasn't the case when I took some geraniums - the Canon saw them as blue, not purple), what am I doing wrong?!

I'm sure the experts will be along to give you a detailed answer but meanwhile....You need to close up the aperture a bit with macro and start at around f8.
I feel sure that the colour misrepresentation is related to the light but I'm sure someone will comfirm/deny that fact soon.
It also looks like either the flower or the camera moved while the canon shot was taken. A tripod is very useful when taking macro shots.

Reproducing some natural hues, especially in flowers, has always been problematical for film and, now it seems, digital cameras

You could experiment with the white balance setting in your camera or, more sensibly, shoot in RAW and adjust the colour when processing the image in your RAW developer. You should be able to achieve a near-perfect colour representation that way.

A tripod is always handy but it won't fix a wobbly flower Wait until the wind subsides or stabilise the flower stem some how before shooting.

Thank you both for your comments and suggestions, which I'll try when we get a brighter (!) day!!

Ian - I don't think my camera supports RAW

According to shutter speeds used and f stop, your Cannon was set at -.34 EV. While the phone was normal exposure for its settings. But from eyeball appearance, the cannon would be a stop under the phone.
Light settings will make some differences in colors, but my Fuji, and Panasonic never see flowers quite the same. As to which is the most accurate, depends on the lighting.
