Re: Banburgh & Lindisfarne (Member meet)

I sometimes think we as photographers, are gifted with items which apparently have just been dumped but which can enhance our photos.

On Lindisfarne, we spent some time round the harbour area, as we made our way over to the castle. Everywhere you looked it seemed there was a potential shot, but often there had been something put on the ground which seemed to enhance the foreground of the shot.

I'm beginning to think its all done on purpose, just for us photographers. Maybe the National Trust send a person out to suss the best shots and leave some old fishing or sailing bric a brac on the ground to help with the shot

I mean........................... who leaves lobster pots, old rope, and rusting anchors just lying around.....................it just ain't natural

Hell that castle looks dead romantic - true fairytale stuff. I am determined to get there one day. Will bear in mind from your Viking pic it seems that gumboots (aka Wellingtons) are the most appropriate footwear. Must improve my skiving skills although if you've only been in a job a few weeks its kind of impossible.

Looking at the gallery my favs were (not sure if there are more in than out)
      8456e
      8301e
Lindisfarne Castle (the one with the stone wall)
      1222a
Bamburgh coast looking out to Farne Islands
      1094a and 1096a
      Upturned boat

I am going to catch a train from London to New Forest this weekend and then catch the jump on jump off tour bus. Any tips on the best places to jump off from a photographic point of view would be welcome and of course if anyone wants to join me it looks like it could be a lot of fun.

A couple of the upturned boats-cum-fishing huts we saw on Lindisfarne. The hues have been altered a few degrees from default and the vignettes added in post-processing.

The grassy green hill is an important component of Bamburgh Castle (for me anyway) and the lighting picks out the colurs and contours very well on this shot. The rocks, sky and sea also have a superb array of lighting and colours so it'd be a shame not to be showing them.

I'm not saying the scene would always be better in colour - it's just that I think the colour version works very much better this time.

Thanks for the input. I must say im torn between them

Tim - Two lovely pictures with great atmosphere. Of the two I think I prefer the first as crab/lobster pot is well positioned. The second I feel is too 'cluttered' with all those bits and pieces..

By the way, have you taken up 'gurning' judging from your new avatar.?

Haha, is this your naturally tidy manner that is talking here Dennis, or is it from a photographic point of view

Surely the cluttered scene is the whole beauty of the shot and why it works as a picture. Without all the bric a brac it wouldn't be the image it is........... does that make sense I've just read it again and I'm not sure I'm sure you get the gist of it though.

Thanks Dennis. I too felt that the second scene was cluttered, but then I felt that it somehow had an honest charm which I ought to capture; clutter and all...

I currently have all my own teeth, so the gurning will have to wait a few more years. But I will gurn habitually one day, I promise

These are my last two for now......the rest I'll have a look at when I have some more time. Another of the morning (4.30am) shots of Banburgh Castle, and another of the hut-on-stilts which is on the causeway at Lindisfarne.

All superb photos - all of them full of good, bracing and salty air.

I'm interested to know if you actually stopped on the causeway and got out of the car to take the shot of the 'rescue refuge' ........ or did you just slow right down and take the shot from inside the car and through the open window?

It must be cold, horrible and frightening to be caught out by the tide and have to spend several hours in that hut.
