  • More holiday pics from Alaska

Three more photos I've been working on. The first I liked as it shows the bow of the ship as it slowly edged its way to the John Hopkins Glacier, which I posted a pic of earlier. The second shot was taken about 10.30pm on our last evening on the ship as it made its way to Whittier our destination. The third shot is of the Portage Lake near Whittier, its essentially glacial meltwater from the Portage Glacier. There was still ice on it where we were, I imagine it would have all gone a few days later

    Wow, these are superb.

The third is just wonderful..........it really has depth and gives you a sense of the place and the scale of everything, whereas the other two are less successful in that particular respect. You can see beauty in all the shots, but it's the latter one which takes me closer to the feeling of awe one would experience actually being there.

In my very humble opinion I like the first one. I like some sort of reference point and the ship does it for me,

Thanks Paul, the reference point principle is exactly why I took the photo and showed it here, though I can understand why many would prefer it without such an intrusion

Well I like all three. The first gives good scale with the inclusion of the boat and the people on deck. I love the light in the second. And I can see why perhaps Tim likes the third. It's taken from a low angle and makes you feel you are standing there. Looks like a successful trip, great images.

Stephen - Three more remarkable images. I like the first and the third best as they both convey the feeling of scale and isolation. I find the second a bit unreal though I should imagine the time of day and position of the sun created this surealistic appearance.

                Stephen.

Third is my choice. The rocks lead you in, the water is serene and the eye pauses to explore the area to the left of the draker mountain face. Lovely

Thanks for your comments everyone, its much appreciated. I often think that your holiday photos stir memories in you that make them far more meaningful to you as the photographer, whilst to others they don't always have the same effect or impact. I accept peoples reasons for preferring particular shots though.

Re: More holiday pics from Alaska

about he first one: when I found the red one was a person, then I realized how big the ship was - and then the wild nature! Without it, I would not have realized that, as never been there. It also helped when viewing the other two.

about the order of the presentation of this pic (with ship). Either the first or the last, IMHO. When used as the first, as you did, then it helps me in appreciating the other two in natural order. When it had been placed at the last, probably after having viewed the last one (in this case, the ship one), it would have caught us in a surprise - and then some of us would go back to the first two (without ships, in this case) to confirm the scale of this landscape. Of course, for those who do not know the place. As you implied in your exlanation, it does is the good and indispensable reference.
