Another "Road" photo. This was taken on the Big Island. The only road across the Island, Cross Island Road or Saddle Road goes though some desolate and beautiful terrain. I love the small cinder cone here. Many who have seen this photo ask if it was taken in Kansas or some mid-western location. It's interesting, I think, to see some sides of Hawaii which are less explored. Of course the light was "happening" here and having been back to the same location several times I've yet to see it like this.

    Thanks!

Hi Philip - you have a very dramatic sky there but it doesn't seem to live well with the land. I presume you enhanced the sky, but I think it has been over-done.

Have you thought about doing a completely mono or mono toned version?

As a matter of fact someone in my studio suggested this as well just the other day. I've tried a B&W but not toned. Or maybe I should just tone the sky down a notch. Thanks for taking the time to send me your thoughts.

It's certainly an image worth investing some time in!

Whoo! hold up, overdone the sky a touch, great potential though.

I'm probably going to be the contrary opinion here but I like it just as it is.

We sometimes get similar skies across marshland about 30-40 miles from home and the colours can truly be very intense. The skies can also be very striking with intense contrast and 'golden' colours on the land, the shafts and/or swathes of sunlight that can be present alongside the threatening clouds.

I am with Pol on this one - love it as it is. I always used to think those kind of skies were uniquely African until I came to England where you get even better one's. I would never have guessed Hawaii as the location of this picture but there you go - you live and learn.

This is one of those pictures you ether love or hate. I rather like this image. Before passing comment on a picture, I like to download it and try out my thoughts to see if they work. I found that selective lightening of the sky just a touch, then a further lightening of the whole image with a colour balance shift towards the warm side, worked to produce a very pleasing image. All I felt missing was something at the end of the road to hold the eye. Of course all my personal taste and not necessary correct.
