I always feel sad when I visit these boat graveyards. All that rotting wood and their history will be lost.

Nice images Rog, though I'm questioning why you have resorted to mono. Was there no potential in the colour?

Yes a sad sight to see these vesels just lying there, but they do offer some good photographic opportunities, as can be seen in your images, I think the mono treatment is ideal for these images and suits the mood well.

        Re: Retired Boats

I like the composition of the first one Roger.

Although I think I might have been tempted to position it from the bottom left, I can see you have chosen the best composition to show the side of the boat and the sand.

I am not particularly a mono lover, even though I can see your reasoning for using it. I wonder what it would look like in colour?

I very much like the first one and think mono was probably a good choice. A desaturated colour version would also work. Mono definitely for the second one. This is a bit busier than the first and I think colour would be a distraction. Two nice images that capture the scene well.

You are quite right Stephen, there is plenty of colour info in the originals, but a friend of mine, who has a souvenir shop here, asked for some b&w for his shop wallpaper. They actually look pretty good as A3's on the wall behind all the brightly coloured cards and souvenirs. The colour versions, untouched yet, look really over saturated to me, a combination of bright green weeds, a dark blue sky, and really awful paint that the fishermen use!

Yeah the mono is definately better for these pictures and not only because original colours are a bit glarey and dominating but taking the colour out accentuates the shapes which I think are the most interesting feature. Also the mono helps to emphasize that there is an historical significance here! Its like they may have been taken so long ago before colour film was developed.

Yes, after seeing the colour, I have to concede that I think mono is the most suitable.

Audrey I downloaded the first image and removed 75% of the colour. I now think that looks even better than the B&W version.

                    Re: Retired Boats

I think that is a good trick. Some of our members at our Photographic Socy have done that. The one I have in mind was a boat too and it looked really good and suited the scene.

But colour suits this one better I think!

                        Re: Retired Boats - Again

I certainly started a discussion here, didn't I! I am surprised that nobody has mentioned dual toning yet, which is one of my favourite ways of presenting a different look to a subject. Here is my version. (One of many!)

Well I'm still not convinced that B/W is the best for the photos Whilst I accept the criteria that led you to using B/W, I've taken loads of shots of old wrecks and the like and always found them more pleasing in colour, even though I may have altered things slightly. This shot for example was taken under pretty dire conditions and yet with a little tweaking I feel has benefitted from remaining in colour. I like the idea of toning in principle, but with your particular example I can't help wanting more contrast.

Clearly there is divide in opinion - I personally prefer the mono versions of Roger's pictures, but I quite like the colour in your old boat pictures.

Nothing wrong in either preference - it's just a preference.

You are quite right Ian, different folks, different strokes!
I sometimes like the raw look of high contrast (very high!), which is when I use the 'Apply Image' method. It does work really on some portraits.
