  • Glacier Panorama

This is a panorama made up of 6 separate shots. Its of the Margerie Glacier in Tarr Inlet, [ame="http://maps.google.com/?q=Glacier+Bay,+USA&ie=UTF8&ll=59.045941,-137.045345&spn=0.154692,0.752563&t=k&z=11&om=1"]Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska. [/ame]On the satellite image its at the top left of the inlet.

The cruise ship we were on goes pretty much to the end of the Tarr Inlet and stays there opposite the glaciers for about an hour. It turns slowly so that people on both sides of the ship get good views. The glacier is well over 1km wide as it meets the sea, and its estimated that the ice is around 200yrs old.

    A trerrific image Stephen,
A standard I am aiming to achieve as I am trying my hand at Pano's at the moment, The information you provide also adds interest as well. The icy grey of that water does not look to inviteing .

Impressive - and a canny pano too.

I was watching a film recently, set in Alaska, and it made me wonder if you were in permanent daylight when you were there?

Have you ever seen the psychological thriller film "Insomnia" - Al Pacino and Robin Williams? Perhaps you'd recognise some of the landscape? There's also a scene with a float plane .. not dissimilar to the plane, landscape and terrain of your own shot of the plane.

          Outstanding work as always Stephen!

I too would love to see this as a large print, I bet you could really immerse yourself into that.

You might even say 'its a very cool picture!'

It's interesting to see the glacial ice is blue compared to the neutral-brown snow that surrounds it. It kind of glows with that blue

Actually, I wonder if Stephen can tell us how far north he was?

I've been above the Arctic Circle in Finland in late winter or early spring, but by then the days weren't that short - still effing cold though! The closes to feeling the long day length was a stay in southern Norway in the summer. It didn't really get fully dark at night, though the sun did set below the horizon. But the sky continued to glow until dawn.

Great stitching!! Such an interesting place to visit too. Did you hear any of those singing whales or see any of the jumping one's - I once saw a movie of them and it was incredibly dramatic.

The stitching was done using Panorama Factory.

No singing whales I'm afraid, I think that's something that is an underwater thing, but you see them blow then hear the hiss. No jumping ones either, apparently thats something seen later in the season. Then if they dive you see the tail come out of the water like this one
