  • Moorhen in lime green water

I was fascinated to see how this shot of a Moorhen turned out. The water on the canal is a rather interesting line green, almost metallic, hue.

    Ian,

I am curious to find out if the water was that color on purpose or if there was some sort of reflection?BTW I think that would be a perfect POTD.
Great shot! I need some people to second and third that. Can the forum members nominate you?

Oh, I'm far too modest to award myself a POTD! I'd rather not have to be the one to choose, to be honest.

I also try to limit the selection to one POTD per person per month, which does mean some ace shots will miss out, but that's life.

Oi, Stephen, you mods get a crack of the whip - I was going to nominate one of yours from Alaska soon anyway

It was definitely a reflection - from greenery on the banks, it was a very bright and sunny day. The in-camera JPEGs had very odd, over-saturated colour - the auto white balance was probably confused. The one shown here is from the RAW file, developed in Photoshop CS2. The Moorhens had fluffy (and rather ugly!) chicks out on the water as well, but the pictures of them aren't really worth showing.

I thought maybe the lime green had been caused by an algae infestation! We get it on some dams & its real puke green! It also makes creatures sick at times! Greeeen Slime!

Ah - no The Grand Union Canal section here in Hemel Hempstead is not affected by algae. My theory is that the rich green from the bushes and trees on the banks has been tinted by the blue of the sky. In open water you'd see a blue reflection of the sky.
