  • Butterfly!

    Hello all!

I am very exited about this picture. I was in my mother -in- laws flower garden for 30 minutes when this butterfly landed right in front of my camera! all I had to do was focus. If you look closely you can see the stymen of the butterfly going right into the small flower. This is gonna be on of my favorites. In fact it is now my new desktop picture! I could not wait to get it posted for you all to see. I hope you like it as much as I do!

    Re: Butterfly!

Beautiful soft gentle greens Jennifer. I can understand you want to preserve it and have it as your desk top. However, I hope you don't mind but I have had a little tweak at it, as I think there was more there.

I cropped it slightly and darkened the corners to concentrate the eye more on the butterfly. I may have darkened too much!

I sharpened it a very little, but it was beginning to show the grain.

Is it an improvement or not? I don't know, and it is your photograph. You may prefer the original.

I know you will enjoy it anyway.

      Re: Butterfly!

      Autumn,

I am currently taking classes with The New York Institute of Photography. This photograph was actually taken for one of my assignments! I promise that the original is much sharper.in fact when I printed it out on an 8x10 the eyes of the butterfly are crystal clear! The only thing I have done is resize so I can download to this website.I went to my gallery and in fact these are not as sharp as the originals.Oh and I do like your version also!

        Hi Jennifer,
A lovely image, and an opportunity well taken, as you it is unfortunate that re-sizeing for the forums does not let the viewer see the image at its best, it sure sounds like a winner.

Downsizing for the forum really destroys quite a bit of the details I find & it is a shame! When I look at my original pic I took for the latest salon, the detail of the apple is so sharp, I can see the juice glistening & texture of fruit. That is lost in the downsized version. BTW I love your photo of butterfly, very calming effect!

After downsizing for web use, it is often a good time to apply some USM. I tend to use the Smart Sharpen option in CS2. I had a go with the butterfly shot above and it improved it no end. You have to be careful however that you don't oversharpen as it can often look worse.
