  • Lighthouse

Known as "The New Lighthouse" on Dungeness Point,Kent. It was built in 1959/60 - the holes near the top are for the internal foghorn.

Shot last week when trying out the Sigma 10-20mm. The weather was foul all week, though this type of sky isn't unusual down there. The horizon is level ..... the sea isn't visible to the right because of the curve and lie of the land. Actually it not visible to the left either 'cos the weather was so awful the sea and sky are blended on the horizon.

    Re: Lighthouse

Pol i think you got the ideal weather for photographing Dungie , last time i was there in Jan it was bright and very blue and quiet honestly it spoiled the atmosphere down there .
Dungeness needs dark moody weather and big skies , preferably shot in black and white to bring out the desolation of it all .
Fish and chips in the ''Pilot'' and a hot coffee in the cafe at the end of the railway makes for a decent day out .
I never got around to walking up to the 'new' lighthouse , your pic makes up for that .
Anyway here's the only shot i took showing both lighthouses in one frame .

      Aha - nice one!

We were parked on the corner (opposite the start of the boardwalk) and I managed to get myself down as far as the fence around the lighthouse then back again just in time before the rain started pelting down. That's about as far as I can manage to walk unaided and carrying the kit at the moment. I'm working on getting myself down that boardwalk though.... so your shot's an added incentive for me to keep hobbling.

I agree about Dunge skies ...... and by heck it can sometimes be an 'experience' when rain or hail suddenly starts belting down. I also agree about the B/W. We have an A3 in B/W which was shot and developed by our eldest son a few years ago. I haven't converted any of my own shots yet ... but no doubt I will.

The station cafe serves good food, falling off the plate and more than I can manage most of the time and I cba with the area during school holidays - if y'know what I mean!!

Good job the horizon is level, or the lighthouse would be leaning to one side! lol

I haven't been to Dungeness for years, I remember the outlet from the power station to be quite impressive.
