  • A quicky with the new lens

Nipped into the garden as it was so nice and took a few quick shots to get afeel for the new 100-400 lens. Here's one taken of an iris 125/sec f11 @ 400mm iso200 This is the full frame.

Now I have to say I'm not used to using such lenses, but already its obvious that for close work at full reach wide apertures are not too useful and DOF is very shallow even at f11. However also, to say it was at 125/sec it suggests the IS is pretty effective.

Not bad at all. Fun innit.

Now how about grabbing a shot of a Yorkie tweeting Sparrow?

What's the minimum focusing distance, then Stephen? That Iris is a corker.
Why do you think that the DOF is shallow? I wonder if my 55mm would give me that DOF at that magnification. I'm impressed with the lack of shake. Really handheld? Very good if you're not fibbing. ;-)
You will have to experiment with taking the same shot handheld with IS and tripod mounted IS off. It's one of those arguments that shall not be settled, but there is obviously no need for IS in the garden. However, in a canoe up the Amazon? Ducking poison arrows? Yess!

              Oh. Not the Amazon. Alaska.
Do the Inuit use poison arrows?

Min focusing distance is 1.8m, and the iris is the full frame. However the bud is out of focus and I would have expected it not to be with a 200mm at f11. All shots definately handheld, I was testing the IS as much as anything. Yes I need to do more experimenting with it. The cherry blossom also shows the shallow DOF at f11

looks like a fantastic lens. really sharp. How do you find the push pull Zoom action?

                  best regards

Hi Josh, not fully tested it yet but first impressions are good. Need to do some more distant shots, perhaps with moving objects.

The push pull zoom action, would not have been favoured type had I a choice in the Canon range. Pushing out to zoom seems odd and then pulling in displaces a lot of air which you can feel on your face when doing so. It has been said that this is a potential dust creation scenario, we will have to see.

One good thing though is that the friction on the lens barrel can be altered so it doesn't slide and zoom out when the lens is pointed down, or when walking with the camera over your shoulder.

have always wondered why canon have not updated the design. although if it's not broke why fix it?

                      best regards
