lens test sigma 50-500mm

I had was trying out this lens at the weekend. The weather was not good, overcast and dull. It did rain in the morning so I did not think I was going to get out at all. I was only out for about half an hour or so in the end. I was well pleased with the range and also found it was able to focus at a good speed. I was using it handheld but think it would be better with a mono pod if not a tripod so will try that also at the weekend.

I had one till 18 months ago , sold it and bought a 80-400 instead .
I liked the lense , tended to creep unless you remembered to lock it but it was sharp and easy to handhold even at 500mm providing it was bright .
I did use it on a monopod and i've several hundred examples of full zoom in less than ideal conditions , put the lense on the pod and not the camera , it balances better .

Hi Bob, I considered the 80-400 myself, but was unsure if it would work with my Canon 1.4x extender. Then I read that with the Sigma equivalent there is no Auto Focus, is that right, surely not. Anyway the lure of the Canon 100-400 was too much. Regarding the creep, the Canon lens has an adjustable friction facility, so hopefully that shouldn't be a problem.

I can confirm the Sigma 80-400 doesn't work with the 1.4X converter (I own both examples), the IS however does continue to work. Does the Canon 100-400 AF work with the converter then? I was under the impression that the combination also became manual focus. The thing that puts me of the Canon lens is that dreadful white colour they insist on, it draws attention to an already attention seeking lens.
The new Sigma 70-200 f2.8 I have just bought does work with either the 1.4x or the 2x and even both together, although it slows it down a little, I have yet to test this out.
No creep on this lens it doesn't extend its length when zooming.

Mine auto focused OK on both the D2X and the Fuji S3 .
The Nikon 1.7 TC won't work on the 80-400 , the mounting is incompatable with the inner workings , could be the same with Canons.
Looked hard at the Nikon version of the 100-400 but think the 100mm end is too long for what i need it for , and i've got the 70-200 2.8 which will take the 1.7 convertor .

Like said in another post I did have the canon 100-400mm but I never seemed to get the best from it. I guess it was more down to user error then the lens. I have a sigma 70-200 2.8 but just wanted something with a bit more range. I now have a sigma 28-60 and the above so I now think I have all my bases covered. Oh also have the sigma macro lens. Hang on I must be a walking advert for sigma when I go out. I do find this lens sharp and also it seems fast even at the long end. Roll on a fine weekend thats what I say

Thanks for that Patrick. Yes the Canon Lens does work with the 1.4x extender. I imagine though that with the 2x it may struggle to focus when at the 400 end, due to the aperture being f11
