Hi George,
Some really cracking macro shots there, I especially like the thistles and the last two, I will have to give it a go again, I was not overly impressed with the macro results of the Fuji, but most of that could be down to me, even though the fuji images are soft strait from, the camera.

Thanks for commenting and viewing the macros.
Now that the battles of the cameras has started on another thread I need to state the following:

Experience all these 21-22 years in photography taught me one thing.
It taught me that all cameras are good as long as you learn to take the best out of it. Same things in digital world and the differences between cameras are very minimal especially when all of us do post processing of any form.
What counts to me is who is able to do the job properly with the minimal cost and if I can take shots with my non professional equipment making them look like professional, that's the ultimate for me.

I don't know which Fuji model you have, but if it is any superzoom model, with some more advanced options than the compacts, for sure it has the potential to do a very good job in a more competing type of photography.
And if it is not so good in macro shots as you say, it is probably better than other cameras in some other job, like higher ISOs as Fujis known to be the last few years.

These are not too good,you are just taking pic's of the flowers and your not trying to do something more artistic.

These macros were just normal photos to show camera capability and ability of capturing detail.
As far as the "more artistic" you mentioned, well, maybe I should consider a Pegasus flying in the background next time.

What do you mean "just taking pic's of the flowers", theres nothing wrong with flowers and IMO these are very good incuding the fly and the net.

Hi Martin, well as you seem keen to defend them can you explain what makes them good. Is it the input of the photographer, being creative and using his skill to create a composition. Or is it the camera that has rendered a colourful and sharp image of a naturally beautiful flower.

Just trying to get a consensus of what makes a good macro

Thanks for putting me on the spot.
Well, I could never come up with the incisive critiques which you seem to reel off at will and are very welcome but I shall attempt to tell you what I like about George's collection.

They all appear full of life with strong colour definition and and the sharpness is excellent. I particularly like the first image with the sharpness of the spines set against the blue sky. I would probably have prefered the second if George had removed the offending branch in the top left, again the sharpness of the flower set against the blue sky does it for me. The final image of the net with the winding ropes is interesting but I'm not sure about the sky in the corner.
No 7.The range of pinks and the definition of the sepals(I think thats what they are called) in the centre of the flower are superb.

As George says he was demonstrating the Macro capabilities of the camera rather than wholly concentrating on composition.

Oh BTW I am expecting delivery of a FZ30 next week so just maybe you were right about my defence of them.

Hi Martin, glad you were encouraged to assess slightly more objectively what you thought about the pics. It must be said that they were put in the Eye of the Camera forum and not critique, though there does tend to be overlap at times. It would appear that Archangel is not looking for critique and he does say

Why he would feel the need to do this I'm not entirely sure. Essentially though I'd prefer it if people explained their comments rather than what may appear to be a knee jerk reaction to some one elses, albeit rather curt remarks.

I'd pretty much agree with you about the first two, at least some degree of drama has been instilled by looking up. However at the end of the day they are lacking in inspiration and show nothing of the context in which they were taken.

I remember not too long ago ddigit posted some shots of flowers, I can't find the one I wanted now, maybe he has been taken it down, but this one is near enough



The flowers are shown in their context and he has differentiated it from the background with shallow depth of field. The main subject is still sharp, and the shot does not appear to be over processed or sharpened.

Archangels other shots of the flowers are pretty much specimen shots IMHO, and are achievable by anyone who can point a camera into a flower head. They are all I dislike about a lot of Macro shots. (sorry everyone)

The fishing net shot is pretty much the same, there is some degree of interest in the texture and patterns recorded, but again it does little for me personally as its not in any sort of context. It really is not even a macro.

Archangel has the added benefit over us Brits of having much better weather and therefore the blue skys and lovely sunshine seduce us into a feeling of 'oh what a great colourful picture' though I wouldn't say they are 'full of life'

I hope you enjoy your soon to arrive new camera Martin, and I'd love to see some of your shots taken with it in due course

Anyway this is not intended as a dig at Archangel, its more a response to what has gone on in this thread and my personal thoughts on the photos in it, even though they were not intended for critique
