  • Early Morning above Wainui

    Hi,

This photo was taken on a recent trip to the Banks Peninsular, New Zealand. We took some "sunrise" shots prior to this. The sky was beginning to lighten and we decided to drive higher. The cloud/mist effect was really nice - like being on a plane above the clouds. I slightly underexposed this shot so as not to burn out the sky. When I opened it in Photoshop I slightly cropped it to emphasis the fence post. The image was a bit dull so I converted it to lab and overlayed all the channels using a method outlined in Scott Kelbys book "Photoshop Channels" - reducing the layer to about 40%.

Lovely pic of a beautiful scene Trev. What exactly is this technique doing to the original, it might be interesting to see. Personally, I've never had much to do with Channels, but that no doubt is simply out of ignorance more than anything

Thanks Stephen. The technique is supposed to add detail & vibrant colour to the image. Each channel gets 'pumped up' - the lightness channel by applying the 'a' channel as an overlay (apply image). The a & b cannnels by applying themselves as an overlay. I have recorded it as an action (Ctrl F12) and I sometimes just apply it to an image to see what happens - just in the way that one does a B&W conversion to see what it looks like. It did it OK for me this time.
