  • Panorama of Cairo from the Citadel

I was looking at the print of this image so I thought I'd post it here. There were definitely 4 images and possibly five stitched for this pano.

It has lost some saturation during the reduction for the web.

Re: Panorama of Cairo from the Citadel

The urban sprawl of Cairo somehow doesn't make for the most attractive of world cities I feel. I have to admit also that there is no recognisable landmark within this scene, though I'm sure someone will point out a world heritage site or something I feel it needs pulling up on the right Audrey, what do you think?

I would agree with you Stephen that it looks as though it needs pulling up on the right, but if you look at the verticals of the buildings they are about vertical.

It was a circular sweep from left to right, and if I weren't in the centre when I took the individual shots, perhaps as I joined them up through the camera guide, this is how they appeared.

I might try to lift it sometime (when I have time) to see if I could do it without too much distortion.

      Thanks for your comment.

        Hi Stephen,
Didn't you notice the pyramids at top right? Bit faint, but they are there.

Haha, you know I did see that, and I thought it was a crane or something, but you are right. It just shows how the sprawl in Cairo has spread out into the desert, also the amount of air pollution

            Hi Audrey,
A well executed Panorama, which shows the mix and clash of modern and hisoric buildings. Well worth doing in my opinion, also I would tweek the image levels and curves to give it more oomph!

When are you due for a trip to Specsavers Stephen?

I do have better ones of the pyramids - well a bit.

Here is the shot showing the pyramids.

Straightened, cropped, sky selected and levels. Curves all over. No sharpening. White and black points selected.

now, that's EXACTLY what i was thinking.

without the necessary landmark to identify the image, this could be any large middle eastern city. you can kinda make out the pyramids in the background but you do need to search for them, know where to look and know what you're looking at.

Re: Panorama of Cairo from the Citadel

Enjoyed looking at the shot took me back to our trip there.
We were amazed when we went to Cairo how busy the place is, how many people live in poverty and how many houses were without a roof and looked as though they had been on fire, the main surprise was how close the pyramids are to the city itself, I really expected them to be further out, shows how much the place has grown.
The museum of antiquities had some great exhibits but they just don't seem to realise what they have as it's not very well looked after, there was building work over some exhibits which had been left unprotected from falling debris.

Cheers for posting the shot Audrey.

if you ever travel across the desert to cairo, the first thing you notice is this cloud on the horizon. that's the smog in cairo. when there, the sunlight is diffused purely down to the pollution, so the contrast in the pano is pretty much how the city appears. seeing photos of the pyramids, you assume they're in the middle of the desert somewhere. in reality, they're bordered on 2 sides by the city! have a look at all the photos of the pyramids in books. the 'cloud' you see behind most images is the smog hanging over the city.

audrey, did you get any shots on the outskirts of cairo? the, for want of a better expression, slums there really bring it home how some people survive.
