Playing with the Panasonic Lumix S1 full frame mirrorless

Thanks to my good friend, Uematsu san, from Panasonic Lumix who was visiting London from Osaka last week, I was able to spend a couple of hours using the remarkable Panasonic Lumix S1 full frame mirrorless camera and its impressive (and large) 50mm f/1.4 lens.


The picture above was taken at the British Museum in their current Japanese exhibition. The figure is only a couple of inches tall and the photo was shot through a glass partition.


And this is me with the camera in hand

Cant get over the size of that lens ! It's massive !

I meant to shoot this at f/1.4, focused on the lady's face. But the aperture was set to f/3.5. Nevertheless, with the crop there is trememndous detail and still plenty of bokeh

Very good, even with the crop.

Wow, that's impressive - but that's a huge 50mm! I do have the Canon version of the f1.4 which looks like a nifty fifty next to that.

The lens is a no-compromise design from Panasonic, who also design and manufacture Leica lenses, under licence. If it was meant for film only, it could have been considerably smaller, but the nature of digital sensors means you need 'big' optics to maintain sharpness and brightness well into the corner of the frame, as well as control optical distortion without resorting to in-camera corrections.

The LX100 Mark II produces a pin sharp image, and very natural looking colour.

I confess I did some work on the colour and tone but not sharpening or. And this is a crop, too.


The light in the restaurant (Pizza Express near the Tower of London) was very difficult; watery lunch time wintery sunshine from outside combined with harsh artificial lighting inside. And this was a JPEG, not RAW.

That's a nice image.
Would have been even better without the third person in the background. But as you were in a eatery, you wouldn't have had the choice.
