  • SS Great Britain

    More from Bristol

Finally got aboard Brunel's SS Great Britain, like many of his projects innovative and ground breaking in design and concept.

The biggest surprise to me having only ever passed by it on the river is that it actually sits in a dry dock with its hull continually bathed in dry air to minimise the rusting of the hull. The dry dock is roofed in glass and covered by a few inches of water so that the ship looks as if it is docked,

    Mechanics

The passengers must have been short and skinny to fit in these bunks

Originally built for 120 crew and 360 passengers it was later reconfigured to carry 730 and was only 322 feet long (98m). The smallest cruise ship I've travelled on was 176m and carried 650 passengers and 250 crew.

    Top marks for these, Rab.
This is right up my street. Love old ships.
I love the atmosphere in them. I love the cramped conditions.
They have history and are very interesting.
    You have shown it well.

      Re: SS Great Britain

Thanks Garry. Fortunately it was a quiet day so we could take our time and could get some shots with no people in them. The first time we went to Bristol there was an International Music Festival (that we didn't know about) and the City was mobbed. There were more people in the queue for the SS G B than it took on it's maiden voyage. We gave it a miss that time.

Very good images. My husband would have loved these.
