  • Alpine Swift

These guided missiles are amazing, larger and more powerful than the Common Swift they were flying for the fun of it along the coastal cliffs of northern Crete. The flight is very erratic during their early morning play, sometimes turning into a high speed spinning move much like a catherine wheel of old and at the same time uttering a shrill staccato twittering, unlike the screams of our Swifts. Although larger than ours they are still a small bird so unless substantial cropping is accepted it is better if time is spent waiting for one to come close enough, and then keeping it in the viewfinder for more than a second or so was difficult for an old and slow chap like me, also a challenge even for the 7DII AF to acquire and follow. This is probably the best of around 250 shots I took, mainly against the early morning sun, wish I'd had the 400L with me:
