  • Against All Odds

This little guinea pig was born 9 days ago and is the smallest in a litter of three. Female gunea pigs have just two teats and the two larger siblings are monopolizing the mother, leaving this little sow under-nourished. We have tried temporarily removing one or both of the other babies from the cage to give this little one a chance to feed but the mother misses them and appears to reject her. My wife is hand rearing her with SMA milk dispensed through a small plastic syringe. There is no guarantee that she will survive but we have to help her the best we can.

Aaaaah bless, such a sweet little creature. All life is so very precious and well done for trying to help.

Fingers crossed it'll all work out successfully.

She deserves to make with that care you're giving her. Then Dibnah can play with her! (Dibnah is our Jack Russell)

Just take it easy. There's always tomorrow. And if tomorrow doesn't come, you won't have wasted any effort on it.

        wicked!

Although I'm a dedicated mutt-nut I'd be in the for 'Runty' camp should that 'game' ever came about.

Thanks, Pol and Stephen. There is already a sad side to this story and it was almost even worse; there was a fourth baby, which died in the womb. Despite constant straining the mother was unable to pass this and we knew that unless she suceeded she would die, too. Fortunately, an emergency trip to the vet for an injection to increase the strength of her contractions did the trick. Debbie won't let her breed again in case she has suffered internal complications, so it will be a happy retirement for this little piggy once she has weened her babies. This was her second litter.

Stephen, Dibnah would think that Christmas had come early! But I'm sure her "prezizie" wouldn't last long!

No problem, John. She's got the ideal job for someone who loves animals - that would suit my wife!
