  • Starlings

My television aerial was taken over by Starlings in the late afternoon sun today.

Not quite a murmuration but they looked great in the sunlight.

They do stand out with the blue sky in the background. Not seen many starlings about. John.

Only saying this morning that "we haven't had them in the garden this year stripping the grape vine"... Actually, I can't remember seeing any small birds this year.

Interesting you should mention that because we've noticed quite a marked difference in this year's visiting bird population. We have plenty Starlings, quite a few Goldfinch, Greenfinch and Chaffinch, Bluetits and Great tits but the Sparrows seem to have disappeared completely.

We have Bluetits nesting in the eaves and usually had Sparrows nesting there as well as in the Conifers but no sign of the Sparrows now. We also had House Martins but they've disappeared.

          No Hedgehogs now either.

The garden wildlife behaviour has also changed this year - they're more hungry and have been throughout the whole year. We've been needing to put out a lot more food, also put out extra water baths, which the Starlings seem to like (and squabble over). The Starlings are also greedily grabbing mealworms, suet pellets and suet balls.

I guess they're 'weather-weary. the same as the human population.
