  • Rare doesn't mean exciting

Our local nature reserve has a number of important rare species, but that doesn't mean they are much to look at.

This is the frog orchid, an inconspicuous little greenish thing 4-6 inches high. Under 20 spikes known to be on the reserve this year.

You're right, it's the sort of nondescript plant many of us would pass unnoticed, but it has an intrinsic simple beauty for anyone sharp-eyed and bothered to look. Thanks for showing, Mike.

I find a lot of pleasure in seeing wild flowers during a walk even if I can't name them all. I reckon that while a single frog orchid doesn't seem much a bunch of them would look super.

What John said. The nondescript needs recording just as much as the more spectacular species.
