  • Name this bird - Sri Lanka

I took this photo of this bird when in Sri Lanka a few years ago. I just thought I would see what it was and have searched for:

Sri Lanka, bird with long black tail, brown/tan body, black shaggy feathers on head, crop and under belly, black curved beak.

The nearest I have got is:

    Purple Rumped Sunbird Nectarinia zeylonicca

I've also looked for the young of the sunbirds, but I don't think it is like the pictures I have seen.

Can anyone help? It's annoying me.

Looks a bit like one of my chickens after a downpour!

          Audrey,

Google for Birds of Sri Lanka then look through the images. I think it might be a 'Coucal' - so Google for the Coucal too.

P.S ... There are some good images of the Coucal at ...

Thanks very much Pol. The Lesser Coucal seems to have scraggier feathers around its neck, but I can see that the Greater Coucal also may be able to fluff them up a bit.

Here is another one that I must have taken on another day, but does not look too scraggy.

They''re actually rather good pics. I especially like the first one, the scraggy little chap on the ground. I remember your trip to Sri Lanka and the series of images. They're all very good and the Coucal shots are worthy additions imho.

The G3 served you very well. I still have mine here. I occasionally recharge it and give it a brief airing. I'm as bad as David for hanging onto kit.

Thanks Pol. Yes, I still have my G3 and the WA and Telephoto lenses. I haven't used it for years, but can't part with it. In fact when I look at my Sri Lankan and Thailand images in Lightroom, I find that I can now improve them. I still miss the articulated view finder. My Fuji HS10 only tilts. The trouble with the G3 is that it is so slow and I used to miss pics whilst it was writing. Also the memory is so much greater with the modern cameras.

The G3 would be great for table top photography and times when you weren't going to take too many pics. The quality is stunning.

I still have never owned a DSLR and wont now. My back is not strong enough to carry all the gear and I can't be bothered to change lenses. I just want to point and shoot and I am satisfied. The little Panasonic is quite good in good light, but noisy at night.

The G3 is certainly great for selfies, couldn't be better.

I have 3 dSLRs - the istD, the K10D and a K20D and I'm fed up with not being able to use them. They're heavy but I can usually manage with a bit of help from David, though he's struggling too this year.

I can't help thinking (hoping) we'd all be much better if this atrocious climate would settle down and we were having 'nomal' seasons again.

I never thought of that! (the selfies)

Me too, but we are lucky and have had no floods, no snow, about 2 mild frosts and quite a bit of sun! I feel so sorry for those folk in the south west.

It's an ongoing nightmare for them - thousands of West homes have lost power again during the night.
