Prompted by a thread on Spring flowers I ventured into the garden in a biting wind to see how many flowers I could find. I was amazed that so much was in flower, some you would expect such as Mahonia and Heliotrope but Pelargoniums and Dianthus were totally unexpected. A measure I think of how mild our Winter has been so far. It gave me a chance to try out the recently acquired E-PL3 with my m60mm macro just using the bundled flash.



























Not a bad little set up really and good for this type of subject which is exactly what I bought it for. Now I must devise a diffuser for the flash, anyone got any ideas?

I use a piece of kitchen towel

Mother nature is wonderful but she has been easily fooled by the mild December.
I have lots of buds showing that really shouldn't be seen yet but only the cowslips are in flower.

The term 'diffuser' is a little misleading - what you need to do is to increase the area of the light source - a small area will cast more sharply defined shadows. My Heath-Robinson solution is to hold a sheet of white paper in front of the flash, taking care not o reflect any of the light back on to the lens. This usually works very well, although the arrangement can be a little clumsy if you need to hold the camera as well as the piece of paper at the same time! Best use a tripod for the camera

A 'diffuser' dome like that will only work properly indoors with walls/ceilings for the redirected light to be bounced from. The 'diffuser' itself will still cast sharp shadows on the subject otherwise.

Lovely set of images David. Perhaps I should go and have a walk around the garden to see what we have in flower. Quite a lot of the bulbs are peeping through.

Can't wait for Spring. It's very windy here is Worksop, but the sun is out. We are very fortunate and have not lost any fences, not have we had flooding.
