Interest on savings accounts is currently so low that it is actually a bad investment that doesn't keep pace with inflation. Leica cameras and lenses on the other hand.........and you get good use from them before you need to resell them. Just be aware that if they are realy to be regarded as an investment you must accept that one day (hopefully not for many years) they must be sold. That's what you can tell David, it's worth a try!
Ooooooh, don't get me going about the M8 or M9 and the latest Noctilux f/.98.
JW only got into photography imaging a few years before he took those pics. He spent hundreds, nay thousands of hours and money during his photography imaging phase. I used to be glued to his Photoblog and the discussions on there. It gives me hope that maybe I can do it too. (He's a graphics design lecturer).
David has nightmares when I get locked onto JW's work and start asking him all sorts of questions and looking at the savings accounts.
Well I can dream, can't I.

I've been spending ages in the Red Dot Shop going through all the pre-loved ones with him - tears of desire actually welling up in my eyes as I imagine one in my hands. How pathetic is that, eh.
He took pity on me when I said I want to know how to use a rangefinder before I pop my clogs. He staggered up and shuffled to his 'glory hole' (aka the pile of stuff in his study) and came back and handed me his ancient Zorki-4 and told me to focus on a postcard on the wall.
I remember Zorkis! Does yours have that typical bad qualith leather smell?
Ian
Yes it does but it's kinda reduced by the pong of soap as David had just washed his hands when he handed it over. It's heavy and it doesn't have a red dot but I did manage to focus on the postcard on the wall.
The postcard in question has a sort of red dot on the bottom corner and David will get a clip around the ear next time he comes near enough.

David is missing the point. A Zorki is of interest to photo enthusiasts but it is not a financial investment like a red dot camera and especially the lenses. You gota keep trying on this one, Pol.

No camera is an investment in this family, never has been and never will be. They've all been tucked away throughout all the years I've known him - also been the reason for more spats than I care to remember. He even buffed up that old Zorki yesterday!
I'm quite lame at the moment, can't manage to stand for long and I'm walking with a stick, a trekking pole actually, better for my personal pride and image. I also have an injured left arm and right wrist, fell off a bike when I went too fast down our street and ended up in the conifer hedge at the front (missed the driveway). I sold my car (left foot not reacting well enough to be safe) and he slung my bike onto the rubbish skip.
I think maybe I should accept my limitations and accept I'm a too much of an old wreck at the moment as I can't even manage my dSLRs.
A Leica might be lighter but I can't get around on my own well enough to justify the expense ... but it wouln't 'arf cheer me up to have one to 'have and to hold' and maybe shoot my feet and those stupid postcards.
Well, a Leica is the one camera you can buy secondhand, use and enjoy for a while, and eventually re-sell without making a loss. If it makes you feel better it will be money well spent. Could the money from the sale of your car be used?
Gosh, I'm sorry to hear about your injuries, hope you recover soon.

My car was sold almost a couple of years ago and it was almost 20 years old when I sold it. It's still running actually - I sold it to a family garage who had maintained it down the years and it's now used as a courtesy car. I only got £500 for it, which was generous at the time and only because they knew the car so well (and knew me too)
TBH I have my own personal a/c and savings a/c and I also have enough for the camera and lens. I could get what I fancy for a total of approx £3000 but I'm just too tight-fisted. I'd also be frustrated not being able to move about as much as I'd like and not having my own car therefore having to depend on David for transport.
It's actually reached a point where he is trying to convince me I should click the submit button at the Red Dot site (I already filled my shopping basket ... ).
I keep saying telling him I wanna be able to move better and to be able to stand more securely. Then he reminds me how much easier it would be than the Pentax SLRs ... and so it goes on. Yadda, Yadda, Yadda
Approx £3060 would get me what I'd like ( secondhand camera body in excellent ++ condition, boxed and and less than 1000 actuations, lens and UV filter. Too much to waste on an old crock with 3 knackered limbs and no personal transport.
You're very perceptive. You're also as bad as David. He thinks he might get to share it.
This lens Leica Elmarit 28mm f2.8 ASPH (6-Bit) would be a good all rounder for a starter though, eh. I could go for a 1.4 later if (sorry when) I've conquered the camera. It should also be an okay weight for me and fairly compact to handle.

Interestingly, a Zorki in proper working conditions fitted with the same lens as a non-digital Leica should produce the same image quality!

David's Zorki has a Jupiter-12 35mm f/2.8 attached and there are some excellent examples from those on flickr. Some people there say they are using one on a Leica, latest version was a Leica M6 iirc
