  • Another selfie...

After my recent blog post reflecting on the fact that 'selfie' has been awarded the accolade of 'word of the year':

..here is another 'selfe' - taken using an old film SLR lens, an Olympus Zuiko 50mm f/1.4, which is probably about 30 years old:

This was one of a series of shots taken for an Amateur Photographer magazine article I have just completed which looks at how useful an old lens like the one used can be.

Don't you mean, "Phoaaar! Look at the resolution on that!"

The eyes and the forehead look super sharp but outward from that it starts to fuzz a little,
at least that's how I see it.
          Good looking subject though

            Good looking? What, my spectacles?

The minimal depth of field you have rightly noticed was on purpose, to show the lens working at full aperture (f/1.4). This is really a test shot

Insufficient DOF is a common problem with Micro Four Thirds cameras, unless you stop the lens down a bit.

It's the paper-thin DOF that I especially like about it. I especially like the way it's framed and the way the point of focus draws you right into the eyes, into the soul.

I also like the way the diminishing focus of the face 'surrounds' him with clues to the sense of humour - if you see what I mean. I always enjoy well executed, very shallow DOF images. Shallow DOF can be a very artistic tool imo.

Nowt wrong with yer specs either, Ian. You should see mine!

I'm getting nostalgic about the way JW (John Washington) used to use a Noctilux f1 on Leica M8 with wonderful effect. His blog and website is gone now, he's working on other imaging methods but many of his images are still archived on flickr.

Many of his artistic shallow DOF images are still there though you'd need to search for them and I'm not sure his Noctilux + M8 images are there.

Here's the link to what remains of his archive.

Yes, there's nothing wrong with the DOF - I was making an in-joke for Ian's benefit; the Four Thirds format is often critisized for not being able to achieve shallow DOF.

Aaaach, tell the moaners to take out a second, or third mortgage and treat themselves to an M8 and Noctilux f/1 (or even the later and faster updated kit).

He'd used the speed of the lens to great effect in the seagull shot - taken when he was only a few feet away.

As a matter of fact JW has, or certainly had a range of Oly kit too. I'll see if I can find anything from his Oly Pens etc and let you know if I come across any of his Oly shallow dof examples.

A couple of awesome pictures, Pol, thanks for the links. I especialy love the gull. Wonder if there is still time to put an M9 and Noctilux on my Christmas list?

Ooooooh, don't get me going about the M8 or M9 and the latest Noctilux f/.98.

JW only got into photography imaging a few years before he took those pics. He spent hundreds, nay thousands of hours and money during his photography imaging phase. I used to be glued to his Photoblog and the discussions on there. It gives me hope that maybe I can do it too. (He's a graphics design lecturer).

David has nightmares when I get locked onto JW's work and start asking him all sorts of questions and looking at the savings accounts.

                              Well I can dream, can't I.
