  • Heron with the Digital Teleconverter in E-M5

While walking along a river bank I heard a flapping noise in a riverside Willow and saw this:

    Zoomed in a bit:

Later on passing that way I found the Heron had transferred to the water's edge, a little closer to me and where you might expect to see a Heron:

    And zoomed in:

Later I saw another Heron in a reflective mood:

And for completeness I couldn't miss out the Great Crested Grebe:

All taken with the 75-300mm and the DTC switched on and all OOC jpegs.

Hi David - so these are not cropped?

I know there has been a lot of debate about the digital converter on some Olympus cameras recently (on our Olympus UK E-System User Group forum).

It occurred to me the other day that one benefit of the converter could be metering. If the camera metered the actual area covered by the 'crop' frame then I can see that being potentially very beneficial compared to cropping in post-processing.

      Hi Ian,

The images of the reflections are cropped, the Heron less so than the Grebe. The others aren't cropped. Your point about metering is something that hadn't occurred to me but it could well be useful in that respect. I don't feel I will be using the DTC a lot in the future because I don't like the limitations imposed by jpeg in PP as opposed to RAW.

Very good shots, particularly like the reflection one, that's a great capture IMO.

An impressive series David, I must admit that I have never used the digital teleconverter converter on my E-M5.

The feather detail on the first two is superb!
