        Re: Portrait

Quite soft - presumably this was deliberate? I wonder if the lighting is right for a soft focus study?

Your subject is clearly enjoying being photographed!

We bought a Canon PowerShot SX40 HS last year and I hated it because the results were always soft. David took it over and he finds he only gets sharper results in very good lighting. The results on a bright, very sunny day are fine - otherwise it's virtually impossible to get a sharp point of focus.

I was all for sending it back as the images couldn't even be sharpened properly in PS David and our youngest son use the video function occasionally and David likes faffing about with the challenge of trying to get a pin sharp image from it.

It could be that the SX50 also has a rather soft lens too. Have you ever tried or reviewed on, Ian?

We (Ann1e and I) rather like this - we prefer the portraits of children to be slightly softer than those of adults.

I did soften it for my own preference.

Pol, the sx50 gives much better results than the sx40. It also shoots in raw and will take a shutter release both of which are excluded from the 40. I have found that nothing requires any additional sharpening.

Good subject and I am sure she will sit for you again if asked. Its ok to to make some things softer but the eyes should really be sharp in portraits as that is what most people will look at first

I'd have sent the SX40 back in less than a heartbeat but David wanted to test it and play with it and our youngest liked using the video function so I just let them have it and felt at least I got some value for my money from it.

There was no way the images could be properly sharpened to my satisfaction. I tested it with delayed shutter release with the camera standing on the table - even that didn't give me a sharp image. That was the point when I decided it wasn't for me, thanks!

David sometimes get something a bit more acceptable in very good light - but it has to be VERY good light.

I use the TZ10 for a p/s camera now. Still having some problems holding the heavier dSLRs but gradually regaining some stength, thank goodness!
