  • An afternoon at Heathrow Airport - plane-spotting!

I had a very interesting afternoon at Heathrow Airport today, starting with a roof-top view of the north runway from the top of the Compass Centre, which among other things houses the teams of people who manage the allocation of stands at the airport as well as the press centre. Here is a selection of shots Olympus (E-5 with Zuiko-Digital 90-250mm f/2.8 (180-500mm FF equivalent) on a monopod):

The last plane to take off in front of us before they switched the direction of operations on the runways. It's BA's first A380 on its way to Frankfurt.

With only a short haul destination the BA A380 left the ground a lot earlier down the runway than the others.

    An Emirates A380.

An old favourite - a Virgin Atlantic 747 Jumbo.

A Singapore Airlines A380 which took much longer to get airborne than the BA one!

Singapore Airlines A380 coming in to land after the runway switch-around.

A rather smart Gulf Air Airbus with Formula One livery.

I also had a tour of the new Terminal 2 development which will open for business in June next year - fascinating stuff!

Very nice set of photographs Ian. Just a run down the road for you, it always amazes me how all that tonnage gets off the ground thanks for posting I certainly enjoyed. John.

There is photo competition running on the Heathrow Airport website and a couple of my shots are entered - you can also see the other shots taken on the day; if you would like to vote for my shots or the others, please have a look at:

I'm away off to the farm to help with the harvesting.
