  • One More Night - Orcadian Odyssey Part Three

Following our return from Hoxa Head we had half an hour to relax with a cup of tea in the cafe at St. Margaret's before catching the bus to Kirkwall, the capital of the Orkney's. Another gourmet feast was consumed in the hostel (OK, a ready-meal was nuked almost to destruction in the microwave) before we wandered down to the harbour for some evening photography. Sadly, there was no magical northern light and we had to make do with dull and grey. I took a few scene-setting harbour shots and found two or three details of interest, to me at least, before retiring to the pub (always a good photo shoot back-up).

    The harbour

No doubt highly popular with local fishermen!

Only I could find beauty (??), or at least fascination, in a faded label on an old oil tank!

I've been unable to discover much about the history of this building, located up in the town, but the name conjours up images of officers from HM Government pursuing local characters, engaged in purveying contraband, around the rocky shores and remote bays. Or is that just a product of my over-active imagination and under-employed brain?

This session was a bit of a disappointment from a photography point of view, however at least we still had about an hour to spare the next day in Stromness before catching our return ferry. But would that be enough to add some decent pictures to our collection and would the light be anything other than flat and grey? Look out for the final instalment during the next few days.

Well you might be disappointed with them but you needn't be because they convey a feel for everyday life in Kirkwall. My favourite is the second one, the shot of the lighthouse surrounded by the nets etc.

Well done you for taking on such a trek and all within a few days. It was well worth the effort and you've brought back some superb shots, which I've thoroughly enjoyed browsing.

Thanks Pol, it was a case of making the most of the conditions but I would have liked just a little of that magic Orkney light I've heard about!
