I hadn't been out for a couple of days and needed a small top-up shop so I ventured out with the camera as my route involves some nice areas near the canal and along the edge of some semi-marsh areas alongside a minor river/stream. This is very close to the centre of Hemel Hempstead town. Unfortunately, everything was rather quiet in terms of wildlife - no herons, kingfishers, not even geese and only one swan sleeping on the nest (which is located in a bizarre location - more on this below:

The more informed of you might be able to tell me if the same swan couple use the same nest each year? This location is weird because it is right next to a busy road leading to the town centre and it's quite exposed:

Nevertheless a brood of 5 cygnets were successfully brought up from this nest last year.

A couple of mallard drakes on the bank of the Grand Union Canal.

The shutter speed (1/250th) was not fast enough for this fast-moving moorhen, but it's a nice enough snap - and I didn't have much else!
Finally:

This mallard wasn't interested in me
, but at least he left a nice waterscape of colour in his wake.
