  • Evening light

What a difference some light makes......It has took me 6 months to track down a kingfisher....she turned up at about 6.15 last night in a bright but overall (harshy) light and of the 3 quick pics I got one was so contrasty....but at 7.45 the light had gone a lot warmer and did nice things to her feathers....she stayed only 30 secs on 2 perches before taking the catch home.

If anything I dropped the sats a bit.......

Thanks Barrie...yes I have not seen the local ones for months...after seeing them getting through most of the winter.I think it went on so long they got into trouble.
This was at a reserve but even here they have been turning up less.

Super shots I am sure we all agree. The quality of the light certainly is important as these shots show. I was, quite by coincidence, thinking about this the other day. In the days of film we had no control over white balance and so the advice to shoot early in the morning or in the late afternoon was very pertinent because the low-lying sun sees a warmer light. But even with auto white balance on modern digital cameras the advice still has value!

Barr1e - I briefly saw the kingfishers near the bridge over the canal in Northchurch before Christmas, but the light was fading and I had no chance to photograph them - they were getting further away upstream, too, as it got darker. I returned a couple of weeks ago and stayed for about an hour but there was no sign of them

I'm with Barrie - not jealous at all

              Absolutely beautiful images, them.

I know there are some kingfishers around in Towcester - but have never seen more than a flash of blue before they dart away.

A 6 month task bought to an excellent conclusion. You will be hard pressed to improve on these.
