I love this - it's unusual, interesting and rather amusing, all in one - and it has mystery - just what is this rather porky-looking bird?

I'm hopeless at birds but for some reason "pheasant" springs to mind.

John, I don't think it's a poor farmer of low social status.

I think a peasant, er pheasant -- has a more elaborate tail?

Yep, Cock Pheasant it is. Flew up from right under my feet and made plenty of noise about it - frightened the life out of me!

I had a Ruffed Grouse take off from the undergrowth giving me a real scare. I was walking past an apple tree where a few weeks earlier there had been a big pile of Black Bear poop!

Whoa! I rather take on a fat pheasant any day!

Yesterday morning SWMBO had a Black Bear cross the road in front of her when she was walking the dog. It stopped and looked at them before grunting and disappearing into the bush.
