  • Grey Heron and the Strangest Thing

Where I walk around Sandwell Valley Country Park usually getting within 50 feet of a Grey Heron before it takes off is a feat in itself.

But yesterday walking the three dogs around there as usual I came across one just off the path and away from the lake.

Now the thing is I was about 18 feet away from it with three dogs on a lead when I noticed it and it did not take off. In fact I even moved around it taking pictures from different angles and it is the first time I have ever had to zoom out to fit one of these birds in the frame, after I had finished and walked away it flew off, very strange behaviour indeed. not that I'm complaining.

    Regards Paul.
One day I hope to be the person my dogs think I am.

It's an immature bird, they can be more tolerant than adults. Some adults can be tolerant, I've got head and neck portraits of one.

With three dogs around it as well then it must be very tolerant.

It may have been born in a heronry where people walked dogs and doesn't see humans and dogs as a threat.

An experience you have taken good advantage of.

Perhaps you caught it unawares and with you and the dogs so close it was rooted to the spot with fear!

Whatever the reason for its behaviour, those are great shots - an opportunity well taken.
