Yes it was handheld. I must admit I rarely use a tri/monopod although I often carry e tripod with me. It's just that bird photography has to be so spontaneous that a tripod mounted camera, even with a gimbal head, often results in missed shots - I do use it for MF shots though.

Fantastic pose! Although I am not a bird photographer, I would definitely feel hampered if I had to use a tripod and even a monopod in most circumstances when photographing a bird in flight.

The reason that I asked David was As I have the canon 400mm F5. 6L using it with OMD-M5 and have to use M.F and would be impossible to get a shot hand held. It seems the Canon 7D would be the answer using the 400mm to get a bird in flight with that clarity I can dream on. The Zuiko 200mm plus the 1.4 EC14 I have. The Zuiko 300mm is far to expensive for me Thanks for posting your excellent shots and adding the camera and lens information very much appreciated.
