  • A couple of hours at Frampton Marsh RSPB (Image heavy)

Bright with a very cold Easterly wind greeted me at this superb new reserve. The cold however didn't seem to bother the birds as there were a large number - all very active (at least 800 Dark-bellied Brent Geese).

This was a day to get in the hides with the E-M5/Canon EF 400mm f5.6 combination. Manual focus skills are coming back after years of AF and the magnification assistance on the EVF are a boon on the E-M5.

The lens is a gem and the extra reach of the 400mm is a distinct advantage when added to the resolution of the sensor. Without doubt this lens' IQ is better even than the ED300mm f2.8 + EC14 which is surprising considering that it is around 1/6th of the cost of that combo.

All but the Yellowhammer were taken with this outfit. All large crops.

    Lapwing:

    Male Wigeon:

    Female Wigeon:

    Pintail - 2 pairs:

    Dark-bellied Brent Goose:

Drake Shoveler and Drake Shelduck, very large crop:

    Bewick's Swan:

    Dunlin:

    Male Yellowhammer, with Canon 7D + 400mm

As someone who can't get out to these places anymore I really appreciate seeing these.
