Very nice capture as usual. I always thought Herons waded in the water and then thrust their heads down to catch fish. Do they actually dive off the perch for fish?

I could not say for sure Ian, but they are always on here looking intently at the water, at least till they spot me and fly off.

But I did come across this and the great blue heron is closely related to the Grey Heron.

Other techniques are observed more rarely: for example, great blue herons in flight sometimes dive underwater to catch fish; others hover over the water and submerge their heads to catch fish; and some swim in deep water and feed on fish found near the surface.

They use both methods. Maybe today the water is a bit cold for wading
