  • Art Society Meeting

Last week I attended our monthly Art Society Demonstration entitled "Sculpturing a Head".
The seats weren't arranged as normal and there were tables in one long row with breeze blocks on them. Yes you have guessed, we were to carve the head. After a short demonstration 24 quite elderly members (up to 86) set to with a piece of chalk, nail, mallet, chisel and file. We were given a short demo. and told to do it! Within the hour we had all produced something. It was a very exciting evening and thoroughly enjoyed by all. What amazed me was that we didn't have any pictures to copy from and some of the results, I thought were amazing. What do you think?

I agee that is amazing, it would be interesting to have the individual sculpture with a portrait of the artist.

They're brilliant, Audrey, they really are. So many different faces, so many different expressions - just as it is in real life.

Did you get to take your block home so you could stand it in the garden as an ornament.?

Hard to believe these are first time attempts.
5th from the left, centre row is different, very quirky, and the one next to it looks very Egyptian.
I think everyone who took part deserves a hearty congratulations.

IN THE GARDEN Roy has put it on the hearth!

Actually, it wont be staying there. I think I am supposed to put PVA glue on it and paint it, before it goes outside. I might put the glue on it but I don't really know how I would paint it.

              Doh ... sorry.

What I meant was that I hoped you'd been able to keep it and put it somewhere in or around the house or garden.

                Hi Audrey -

Surprising what us matures can do - well some.

I am quite impressed with the work your society set. I think all the bricks are worthy of being there.

When I first saw the pic I immediately thought of the message contained in the Mayan Calendar.

I think yours looks the most feminine in design by far.

Here are a few more images showing the action.

This was a demonstration of Simon sculpturing with flames. It was a wooden full size sculpture.

This was coffee break time, but as you can see some people couldn't drag themselves away.

It all looks like a lot of fun.

Did Roy do one too and if so, which one is his?

No, he said he wasn't interested in someone sculpting a head - he's a watercolourist mainly, however, when I arrived and saw it was a hands on jobby I phoned him to see if he wanted me to pick him up but he said he didn't - I think he was probably looking forward to a quiet night in without me.

Anyway, when he saw what we had been up to and other members comments, he wished he had been.
