My Father-In-Law has a rescued greyhound and that doleful look is quite characteristic; it doesn't mean they are sad animals, though, and yes, they do love lots of attention!
Generally they are gentle and placid, but if they need to see off another dog all it take is a curl of the lips to bare those huge greyhound teeth!John Perriment

I have a friend up north who breeds them (occasionally), races them and keeps them when they retire as well as keeping a couple of Staffies as domestic pets. Needless to say he has kennels and about 5 acres of land. At the last count he had 36 dogs in total iirc ... mostly retired, a few still racing.
He's probably the ultimate mutt-nutt.
