  • Flamingo

Just a few of the hundreds of Greater Flamingo we saw in Corfu. These were on the abandoned Lefkimmi Salt Pans and were unfortunately at least 150 metres distant. Large crop:

    Even larger crop:

It always amazes me that such an exotic "tropical" looking bird breeds in such large numbers in Europe.

    Re: Flamingo

Never been to Corfu - looks interesting.

Flamingoes are very weird birds! I must admit I thought they needed very specialised areas for feeding.

      Re: Flamingo

The crop looks very good, shows them off nicely.

here ya go Ian.... a bit of info.

The shape of flamingo's filtering bill determines its diet. A flamingo will either have a shallow or a deep-keeled bill.

      • Lesser, James', and Andean flamingos have deep-keeled bills and feed mainly on algae and diatoms.

      • Greater, Caribbean, and Chilean flamingos have shallow-keeled bills and feed on insects, aquatic invertebrates, and small fishes. Caribbean flamingos eat larval and pupal forms of flies and brine shrimp as their main food.
