    Comparing modern digital quality:

    Malta

to Fujichrome of 30 years ago. Now some deterioration due to rubbish photography and storage, but to me amazing differences.

Sadly, I cannot for the life of me remember where I took this. I could tell what ship I was on as that is how I categorized my slides but not a clue where! Old age does not come itself.

Not too bad from a flat-bed scanner but yes a lot has been lost in your 30-year old shot. I'm sure it could be perked up some more though.

Probably could Ian. I didn't do a lot with it. Little bit in Levels and that was it. Maybe play about some more. As an aside, is there anything better than the flatbed to scan slides and negs? Obviously the flatbed I am using is dedicated as a slide and neg scanner. I tried one of these stand alone units a few years ago and thought the results were pathetic. Think the missus got me it from Bid Up TV or something :-)

A drum scanner would be best but they cost thousands

I've used an Epson Perfection 1660 Photo model flatbed scanner and have been very happy with the results. My Kodachrome slides, and those of my Dad, have held up much better than the various Ektachrome, Scotchrome, Fujichrome, and Agfachrome slides in both my and my grandfather's collections. The message might be "the sooner the better" when it comes to getting good scans of non-Kodachrome slides.

              I hope you don't mind - I have re-worked your pic a little.

JR, fully agree. Main problem here is obviously 30 years ago we never knew we would have the technology we have now :-) I still remember thinking my Hahnel slide viewing box (cannot remember the proper name for it) was absolutely brilliant! Actually been quite impressed with the flatbed to be honest.

No problem Barr1e, definitely looks better. Still wish I could remember where the heck it was though! Far East somewhere, have a sneaky wee feeling it could be sailing in to China.
