  • To Dream the Impossible Dream

When I purchased my first DSLR, an Olympus E-500, five years ago any thoughts of getting low noise, low light images above ISO 800 on a Four Thirds camera were just an impossible dream. Today, with the E-M5, that dream is reality!

    It's my cat, Thimble, taken at 1/30th of a second, f5.6, 150mm (300mm equivalent), ISO 12800 - with a Parkinson's tremor!

A triumph, I think, for technology, both in terms of sensor performance in low light and the new 5 axis IBIS!

Note: NO noise reduction or filtering applied, but + 0.7 exposure compensation set in camera.

Yes, some of the newest full frame Nikon DSLRs have sensors that are so sensitive you can take photos hand held in moonlight.

Not only has the hardware improved but also image processing. You can go back to old RAW files and make markedly better images from them than you could have just a few years back - it's like your RAW files are improving with age!

It's great that at least some technology is backwards compatible!

Thanks Pops. Before I tried it I strongly suspected that this ISO rating on a 4/3 sensor would be pretty much unusable, but it's been a pleasant surprise. The next level, ISO 25600, is pretty much unusable, but I'm not complaining!

This is a beautiful portrait of Thimble. I like everything about it - the colours, the setting, the pose, also the ever so slight grainy textures.

                Such a sweet cat too.
