  • The giant glowing Wicker Man of Cologne

Last week at Photokina in Cologne Olympus had a very interesting marketing tool in the city's streets - a huge illuminated puppet operated by a team of puppeteers, along with some very catchy music, some of which was performed live. You can see a video of the performance in action at the bottom of this page.

This was a particularly touching moment...

..which the lady in the wheelchair seemed to enjoy too

Dare I say this - but I find it kinda spooky and creepy. I may well have nightmares tonight thanks to that wicker man, which also reminded me of the Edward Woodward's 'Wicker Man' film

I'm not keen on the pianist either. That piano setup reminded me of the 'play me I'm yours project' - only the tomes of those project pianos were nicer and most of the peeps who played chose better music.

I did like the clips which showed the splendid cathedral though. Does that redeem me?

No problem, Pol - all I can say is that it was a rather magical and uplifting experience at the time

I could imaging this being scary to youngsters and a few adults. (at least one anyway ) The music I found atrocious and very irritating and I knocked the sound off after the first minute.
The old lady certainly wasn't phased by it

Of course music is a personal taste - I liked it Actually the best bit in my opinion is the pianist but some of the sound was ruined by wind noise - but if you go to 2 minutes and 9 seconds you can hear (and see) the pianist doing a good job (even if Pol didn't like him ).

I must admit I like the idea of having the pianist there, it was just the choice of music I didn't like. I can well imagine how much nicer it must have been to actually be there though, especially with the fabulous backdrop of the cathedral. Street music and 'carnival atmosphere' is always a joy to see and hear in real life.

Ian, I'm left wondering if the piano and choice of music was a definite, organised part of the event of if perhaps it was part of the 'play me I'm yours' project. I don't see Cologne mentioned in the current locations of the actual project but perhaps it was a spin-off idea borne out of the project, therefore a random pianist playing a random choice of music?

Unfortunately, Pol - I know as much as you do in this respect

                Ne'er mind.

I was just thinking, I have mobility problems but you don't - so how about you popping up to London and maybe getting some shots of the current 'play me' pianos? Maybe you'd also get some interesting video clips in some of the more touristy locations.

Here's the link for the current locations in London. It might be a fun day out for you and the family, or anyone else who might be interested.

Duh - too late for this year. There are only 2 left in situ and only until the end of September.

                  Oh well, maybe next year.
