I don't even know who she is. But there is something about the aspect of her stance - the waving hand and torch, the position of her head - it's rather classically artistic in a way... anyway, I also took these:

I cant think of anything worse than waiting ages in what you think is a great vantage point to find others suddenly barge in your way just as the action starts. It looks like you got a few others for your trouble.

I disagree with you Ian, I think No1 is an excellent photo and really captures the spirit of the occasion. The girl and the torch are prominent against the tightly packed crowd and the forest of brollies; I'd be chuffed with it and it's made me regret not making the effort to see the torch when it passed this way.

The rest of the set is excellent too; that Panny looks to be a good lens.

They're very good! The first one is a superb capture of the torch complete with runner and spectators. I love that particular picci!

The others are all very good too. A great series and, as John said, you catured the atmosphere and spirit of the occasion very well.

Apparently it is something to do with the Ghostbusters movie. Maybe there is a new one coming out?

I thought he was related to Mr.Blobby

Re: 2012 Torch Relay reaches Hemel

i guess your main purpose was to capture the girl with the torch, so i know how you feel. however having the presence of mind to shoot everything else going on before, during and after is what makes the story. it's all too easy to forget this, so the series still works well despite not being able to get the shots you had planned of the torch bearer.

when i did my shots in barry a month or so ago, i had a bus park in front of my carefully planned vantage point (i intended to shoot from a traffic island in the middle of the road). in that instance, i just moved to the front corner of the bus and politely moved others along that tried to stand in front of me. hanging a press pass around my neck and having the big white lens also helped

oh yeah, the dude in costume is the stay-pufft marshmallow man from ghostbusters

Here are some more shots from the Torch Relay:

The pre-planned view before it all went wrong!

                    Yes - there WAS sunshine.

Even when the rain finally arrived, the police bikes kept us entertained - literally!

Lizzie, Lara, our neighbour Paula, and Julia, waiting and posing.

Re: 2012 Torch Relay reaches Hemel

When the torch came to Nottingham I also had a well planned vantage point behind some railings in a church grounds which was elevated from the road. All went well until the torch bearer came into sight then a little boy next to me started waving his Union Jack flag in front of my camera. Luckily his dad noticed and told him to move his flag. I've edited out the flag in this clip.

This was taken with a Panasonic Lumix TZ30, which is quite good considering it's small size. The railings helped to steady the camera.

Nice video - thanks for sharing, Geoff. Do you know who was the torch bearer?

That looked like a steep incline from the efforts the cyclists seemed to be putting in!

I didn't know who he was but some research on Google tells me his name is Nick Tighe, not from Nottingham but Bracknell. His nomination on the London2012 website says that he is involved with organising children's sports. A bit more googling also shows that he is an operations manager with UPS who, by coincidence, happens to on assignment with the London 2012 Olympics. Deduce from that what you will

The previous torch bearer, who was a friend of my daughter, was a soldier who had a leg blown off in Afganistan, the bearers before him were Torvill & Dean who carried it around the Ice Arena.

                          Geoff.

Thanks Pol, the church bells started ringing right on time.
If you are a fan of boring videos I've got 2 more clips of the convoy just before the torch went by, if you click on the button to watch on Youtube it should open in a new window and you should see my other 2 clips in the list. ( A tip for those who don't know is to click on the cog icon to change to 1080p HD then click on the fullscreen icon).
