  • Around Lake Maggiore - Italy

With the weather forecast predicting several more days rain Anne made a last minute booking for a break in the sun.
Our base was Lake Maggiore (Stresa) giving us the opportunity of visiting the many islands and also Milan (train) and Locarno - Switzerland (fast boat).
After eight days of sunshine we wished we could have stayed a few more days, but alas we have commitments to fulfil so here we are back to the wet stuff.

Lake Maggiore is 68 km long, with a breadth which varies from 3 to 5 km, except at the bay opening westward between Pallanza and Stresa, where this reaches 10 km. It exceeds all the other Italian lakes in length, but in the extent of surface it falls considerably below the Lake Garda. Its mean height above the sea level is 193 metres; but as its depth greatly exceeds that measurement, the bed is almost everywhere considerably below the sea-level, and reaches no less than 179 metres below the sea. Its form is very sinuous, so that there are few points from which any considerable part of its surface can be seen at a single glance. If this lessens the effect of the apparent size, it increases the variety of its scenery. While the upper end is completely alpine in character, the middle region lies between hills of gentler form, and the lower end advances to the verge of the plain of Lombardy (Facts from Wikipedia).

Santa Caterina Clinging to a rock face directly overhanging the lake, the Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso is certainly one of the most charming sights of Lago Maggiore.

Nice one, Barr1e. Have you just returned? Are all the locals suicidal after the Euros? (I mean the football!)

I was at Lake Balaton this afternon (south west of Budapest) - just got back after surviving a spectacular thunderstorm on the motorway back to Budapest. I have far too many photos but will try to select some and post a bit late.

              Ian, Pops and angelpaul -

Thanks for the comments and cheering me up on such a wet day here in the UK.

I have more which I will show over the weekend.

I have never seen a car with seats made out of cane - the reason being perhaps is for coolness.

Fiat 500 Coupe and she did sparkle so.
