  • Mink goes a la carte - not for the squeamish!

I spent the morning looking for the kingfishers in vain due to the canal being covered by ice after a frosty night. I was fortunate in that I decided to walk a little further in case the canal was suitable for the birds to fish. It was on my return just a few minutes later I spotted an animal on the frozen surface. Imagine my surprise as I got a little nearer . It was not bothered with me photographing its gorging.

    Mink dines

The sound of the camera clicking attracted the animal and it looks straight at it.

    Licking lips

    Rest before eating again

Some three plus hours later (after my pub lunch) just the carcass remains with an exit in the rushes.

Oh wow what great captures you got here. It was obviously unconcerned about you and your camera.

Great captures, Barr1e - and what a cooperative model. Shame about the duck (I assume it's a mallard?).

Super pics. I especially like the one where he's looking at the camera and the next one where he's licking his lips.

True it's sad for the duck but that's nature.

Mowgli, Pops, Ian and Pol - thanks so much.

I believe it was a mallard Ian. Sad for the duck, agreed Pol - I have seen a video where a mink was attacking a cygnet, switched off before knowing what the outcome was.
