    Re: Goldfinch

Nice captures of a beautiful bird Pops.

If you do not mind me saying there seems to be a lot of smearing of feather detail caused by noise reduction for a ISO 800 image!
    Regards Paul.
One day I hope to be the person my dogs think I am.

Your quite right Paul and I don't mind you saying so one bit.
Looking at the originals again I really could have left them without any nr being applied at all.

I wish we had finches of any description in our garden! The sunflower hearts feeder has been on offer to the birds since May, but only a robin and bluetits have discovered it (well a wood pigeon did too, but soon put a stop to that!).

The best way to attract Goldfinch is to use a Niger seed in a dedicated Niger feeder. The Niger seed is tiny so it needs to be in a dedicated feeder (which has tiny holes to stop the seed falling out).

Just use enough seed to cover the lower holes until the Goldfinch find it. It takes a while for them to find it and you don't want the seed to go manky until they eventually arrive.

We have several Goldfinch coming most days now but it took a few weeks for them to come back after our neighbour had all the hedges felled.

The Greenfinch and Chaffinch come regularly to our regular 'mixed seed' feeders.

Good luck with it, though you need to be patient until Goldfinch find your Niger (Nyger) seed and feeder.

We get a good variety of species coming to our sunflower seed feeders including American Goldfinches, a different species from the Eurasian Goldfinch.

I miss your Goldfinches and Robins, the American Robin is the the size of a Blackbird (which it's related to).

              Re: Goldfinch

I find that almost all finches, including Gold, prefer sunflower hearts in my garden to Nyger. We have 10-15 Goldfinches at a time with as many Chaffinch, some Greenfinch, and occasional Reed Bunting, Yellowhammer, Coal tit, Great tit, Long tailed tit and Blue tit. Great Spotted woodpeckers come about 3 or 4 times a season as does Bullfinch. The Sparrowhawk comes speeding through every couple of days to take it's pick of the littluns and leaves nothing but feathers!

Nice shots by the way but I agree the NR has been too liberally applied.

I have all of thos David except the yellowhammer. Can't say I have ever seen one.
The sparrowhawk seems to prefer doves, never seen him/her take any of the smaller birds.

I remember seeing the American robin featured in Disney's version of Winnie the Pooh - what an insult!

I have never seen Niger seed in a garden that has finches but I have seen them flocking to sunflower heart feeders.

I'm not sure there are any finches in our area to be honest.

I agree with Ian all we get are sparrows, seagulls and a couple of pesky pigeons

A bird I have never taken or had chance to.

Yes, House Sparrows are one of my most published species alongside Blue Tits and Great Tits.
